Winter Fishing

Rainbow trout

In the winter months (April to October) the trout of Lake Taupo run up the tributary streams on their spawning runs. This is what made Taupo fishing famous, a well kept secret within New Zealand and Australia.

Expect to catch mainly Rainbow Trout with a few Browns; averaging 4 to 5 pounds with a number over the 8 pound mark, all prime condition fish.

"90% of the fish are caught by 10% of the anglers" - because they know the technique. Winter fishing is nymphing using strike indicators, and generally more productive with two nymphs.

Access to these rivers is by 4X4 and raft only in the Upper Tongariro.

Winter Temperatures:
Day light hours from 7am to 6pm and temperatures range from 38 to 60 F (3 to 15 C).
